A PBS Great American Read Top 100 Pick With extraordinary relevance and renewed popularity, George Orwell’s 1984 takes on new life in this edition. “Orwell saw, to his credit, that the act of falsifying reality is only secondarily a way of changing perceptions. It is, above all, a way of asserting power.”—The New Yorker In 1984, London is a grim city in the totalitarian state of Oceania where Big Brother is always watching you and the Thought Police can practically read your mind. Winston Smith is a man in grave danger for the simple reason that his memory still functions. Drawn into a forbidden love affair, Winston finds the courage to join a secret revolutionary organization called The Brotherhood, dedicated to the destruction of the Party. Together with his beloved Julia, he hazards his life in a deadly match against the powers that be. Lionel Trilling said of Orwell’s masterpiece, “1984 is a profound, terrifying, and wholly fascinating book. It is a fantasy of the political future, and like any such fantasy, serves its author as a magnifying device for an examination of the present.” Though the year 1984 now exists in the past, Orwell’s novel remains an urgent call for the individual willing to speak truth to power.

George Orwell (pseudonym for Eric Blair [1903-50]) was born in Bengal and educated at Eton; after service with the Indian Imperial Police in Burma, he returned to Europe to earn his living penning novels and essays. He was essentially a political writer who focused his attention on his own times, a man of intense feelings and intense hates. An opponent of totalitarianism, he served in the Loyalist forces in the Spanish Civil War. Besides his classic Animal Farm, his works include a novel based on his experiences as a colonial policeman, Burmese Days, two firsthand studies of poverty, Down and Out in Paris and London and The Road to Wigan Pier, an account of his experiences in the Spanish Civil War, Homage to Catalonia; and the extraordinary novel of political prophecy whose title became part of our language, 1984.

It’s crazy how this book was written so long ago but still has so much relevance nowadays, such an amazing classic book that I didn’t know I needed to read until I read it!

If you have a pessimist point of view, you will find your future in this book.

Orwell's 1984 becomes more and more relevent every year, with different themes being highlighted with each changing political climate. A book that really calls you to think about the reality you exist in. Pulled me back into the world of reading and fiction especially the classics.

I think the plot of the story was extremely creative and really makes the reader think but a lot of the ideas used were overused and kept on being repeated. We understand that in a society under Big Brother, fear is a constant watchful eye and I really liked the twist of situations as he realizes this is not the life to live but I think the ending was too brief and could have been developed more, instead of the start of the book

Winston is an annoying protagonist and not a character to root for. He is not a good person and he is pretentious and elitist.

The Book is good. And many people have talked very highly of this one. But I was not a good reader at that time when I read this. And found it very complex to understand.

It’s a good classic, strong message, but a little bit boring (in a bad way). (Yes things can be boring in a good way)

One of the best books I've ever read. The world it creates is unique yet everyday more common The last reflection about power and what people are able to do to get it gives me chills every time

Unfortunately I had to read this for class, so I didn’t get to enjoy it as much as I probably would’ve if I read it in my free time. It’s a classic though so read it and decide for yourself!

10 from when I was an angsty teenager. Rereading 20 years later, and damn this book has some boring, lecture-heavy moments. Still, the world created and the government machinations laid the framework for a million dystopian thoughtpieces.

Beautiful story. 1984 is perhaps one of the most relevant books of today and it expertly shows the struggle of disliking the Society one lives in. A book everyone should read at least once in their lifetime.

I read it now to compare it with „Brave New World“ and in my opinion, besides both being dystopian, they are not comparable. 1984 depicts the dystopian world in greater detail and it‘s primary focus is the society and it‘s mecahnism (vs. meaning of personal hapiness in „Brave New World“). Great book to read especially in these time of data collection.
