About the book

NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST SHORT-LISTED FOR THE MAN BOOKER PRIZE Brace yourself for the most astonishing, challenging, upsetting, and profoundly moving book in many a season. An epic about love and friendship in the twenty-first century that goes into some of the darkest places fiction has ever traveled and yet somehow improbably breaks through into the light. Truly an amazement--and a great gift for its readers. When four classmates from a small Massachusetts college move to New York to make their way, they're broke, adrift, and buoyed only by their friendship and ambition. There is kind, handsome Willem, an aspiring act∨ JB, a quick-witted, sometimes cruel Brooklyn-born painter seeking entry to the art world; Malcolm, a frustrated architect at a prominent firm; and withdrawn, brilliant, enigmatic Jude, who serves as their center of gravity. Over the decades, their relationships deepen and darken, tinged by addiction, success, and pride. Yet their greatest challenge, each comes to realize, is Jude himself, by midlife a terrifyingly talented litigator yet an increasingly broken man, his mind and body scarred by an unspeakable childhood, and haunted by what he fears is a degree of trauma that he'll not only be unable to overcome--but that will define his life forever. In rich and resplendent prose, Yanagihara has fashioned a tragic and transcendent hymn to brotherly love, a masterful depiction of heartbreak, and a dark examination of the tyranny of memory and the limits of human endurance.

This perfectly captures raw emotion and trauma and left me having to ponder what it truly means to live while feeling utterly alone

My favourite book. Firstly this book is truly amazing, it’s something I would only describe as being beautifully tragic. Yanagihara’s writing style is so fantastic, the way she recounts the memories of all the characters and brings in parts of the story from chapters back is something else. I did not want to put this book down, I felt every emotional while reading this. I was happy, I was sad and I was very angry. The story is heartbreaking, it’s torturous and it’s also full of joy. The story focuses a lot on friendships and relationships, it captures some really overwhelmingly wonderful moments in an all consuming tragic life. I can’t recommend this book enough! You should be prepared for sadness and a hell of a lot of triggers but ultimately this is a story you will not regret reading.

A little life is a study of trauma and pain. The character development in this novel is unlike anything I've ever read before.

Absolutely gorgeous writing. Hanya Yanagihara is so talented, and she made me feel like the characters in this book were people that I knew in real life. This book made me feel so many and so strong emotions. The pain this book made me feel is greater than any pain I ever felt before. I wouldn’t recommend anyone to read this though, that would be really irresponsible. Please look up the trigger warnings if you really have to read this!

A truly heartbreaking read that is not for everyone! Check trigger warnings before reading if you’re concerned. This book probably made my mental health worse while reading but I don’t regret it because it’s so beautifully written and memorable.

It's overrated and most of the plots are actually predictable. It's not a book that gonna impress you if you put high expextation on it. But, i did enjoy the reading, the friendship and the mental health issue that has been told in the book.

Well-written and captivating, but the focus on the main character’s abuse and self-harm bordered on voyeurism. At times it seemed almost manipulative, like a horrible car crash you can’t look away from.

Great read, beautiful prose, but be warned— it’s an emotionally exhausting read. The four protagonists are well drawn in their complexity, and the tragedies visited upon them in their lives will definitely tug on the heartstrings. It is a beautifully written, gorgeously constructed complete story that will stay with you for quite a while after you’ve finished this book.
