A Time Best YA Book of All Time (2021) Two teens must learn the “art of killing” in this Printz Honor–winning book, the first in a chilling new series from Neal Shusterman, author of the New York Times bestselling Unwind dystology. A world with no hunger, no disease, no war, no misery: humanity has conquered all those things, and has even conquered death. Now Scythes are the only ones who can end life—and they are commanded to do so, in order to keep the size of the population under control. Citra and Rowan are chosen to apprentice to a scythe—a role that neither wants. These teens must master the “art” of taking life, knowing that the consequence of failure could mean losing their own. Scythe is the first novel of a thrilling new series by National Book Award–winning author Neal Shusterman in which Citra and Rowan learn that a perfect world comes only with a heavy price.

What an amazing read, one of the best book I have ever read. The story was never boring and I always knew what was going on. The ending was phenomenal and I cannot wait to read the other two in the series and the new spin off in November!

A bit slow in the beginning, but got really good at the end and I couldn't put it down. Positives: - I love the idea behind this book a lot. - After the first few chapters I was so excited for the next chapters ahead. - Both the girl and boy in the book are great, and I loved that even if they were fighting against each other they we loyal for the most part to their scythe and themselves. Negative's: - The first part was a bit slow for me and hard to read a lot at once. - Some parts could have been longer or shorter in my opinion, for example the ending should have been longer when they find out the truth about everything. Overall: 4 out 5

It's a teen/young adult novel with much of what you'd expect for that target audience. It breaks with some literary tropes for novels set it the distant future (don't want to spoil by naming them) in ways that keep you engaged and curious without it feeling forced. The characters are complex. You don't always cheer for the "protagonist" (loose categories) and you can relate to the "antagonist" at times without crossing over to rooting for them.
