A "New York Times" bestseller for seven years running that's soon to be a major motion picture, this Printz Honor book by the author of "I Am the Messenger" is an unforgettable tale about the ability of books to feed the soul. Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak's groundbreaking novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can't resist-books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement before he is marched to Dachau. The country is holding its breath. Death has never been busier, and will become busier still. "The Book Thief" is a Common Core Exemplar Text.

Incredible writing, out of all characters… I loved Death. Loved the idea of breaking the 4th wall with Death, it was fun!!

It was wonderfully written but isn’t my type of book. Choice of narrator and all the metaphors and other stuff was really smart

I do not think this book is the best thing I have ever read. But it made me cry, and if a book makes me cry I automatically love it. It’s also beautifully written, and had a really interesting concept.

I first watched the movie. Right after watching the movie I gnu I needed to read the book. As a big fan of historical fiction I found this book to be wonderful. I have read many books about Germany and it’s history, and I must say this book Will be one of the best I have ever read. The way it was written was great, honestly I found it quite easy to read and perfect to enjoy, obviously very heartbreaking. In my opinion the person they chose to be the narrator was just perfect for this book.

Amazing historical fiction with a sprinkle of magical realism (inasmuch as the narrator is the personification of death) and very raw in its depiction of World War II from the perpective of multiple characters.

This book broke my heart into millions pieces. This book had the fair share of heartwarming and bitter moments but still.....it was just so unfair to Rudy. I love this book from the bottom of my heart!

This novel packs a lot of emotion. Though gives away one of the sadder moments at the beginning of the novel. I chose this novel due to the fact that others said it was heartbreaking. And while that's true, i feel as it gave away one of the biggest events.

One of my favourite books. I love that it is set in Nazi Germany, and is a story told from the perspective of a German family who is hiding a Jew. Liesel’s personal development and her friendship with Max is very interesting. The story also gives a more personal perspective on war
