About the book

image4.5/5.0

From Taylor Jenkins Reid, “a genius when it comes to stories about life and love” (Redbook), comes an unforgettable and sweeping novel about one classic film actress’s relentless rise to the top—the risks she took, the loves she lost, and the long-held secrets the public could never imagine. Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one in the journalism community is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now? Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband, David, has left her, and her career has stagnated. Regardless of why Evelyn has chosen her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career. Summoned to Evelyn’s Upper East Side apartment, Monique listens as Evelyn unfurls her story: from making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the late 80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way. As Evelyn’s life unfolds—revealing a ruthless ambition, an unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love—Monique begins to feel a very a real connection to the actress. But as Evelyn’s story catches up with the present, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways. Written with Reid’s signature talent for “creating complex, likable characters” (Real Simple), this is a fascinating journey through the splendor of Old Hollywood into the harsh realities of the present day as two women struggle with what it means—and what it takes—to face the truth.

I really appreciate how they emphasize that being bisexual and loving someone of the same sex doesn't make you less bisexual

A book that kept me hooked the whole time and kept me guessing of what was going to happen next. So many interesting twists and turns and such an amazing story. It had a bit of everything in it- sadness and romance. I could definitely see why this is being made into a tv series!

Such a good, feel good book, immersing yourself into a fictional story of a Hollywood star and her secret life dating another woman amongst the glamour of the movie industry hustle. Not particularly deep or challenging, just a great escapism page-turner

I loved this book because I couldn’t put it down. I had to know how it ended and I loved all the twists and turns of the book. I thought Evelyn Hugo was an amazing character and was well developed. I loved reading about her life and the way she would have done things the same or different with the benefit of hindsight. Thoroughly enjoyable and perfect to get you back in the reading rhythm.

One of the greatest books I’ve ever read. I’m not sure why it hit me so hard but as I read, all I could feel was the Hollywood glamour, it felt like a book I was watching as a film. Taylor Jenkins Reid is one of the greatest authors of our time!

Very enjoyable and easy read. You become swept up in the glamour of old Hollywood but with the clear eyes of one who understood the harsh reality of the time. I read this in three days and did not become bored once. The plot twist they promise keeps you guessing and though I would have appreciated the story without the mystery, it added something unique to the story.

10 !!! I loved this book so so so much. Taylor Jenkins Reid prepare to be rich because I will buy all of your books. I loved the writing style(especially the chapters as we saw not only Moniques but Evelyn’s point of view as well as a time difference in the two past and present), the plot, the characters and especially the plot twist. I went on completely blind and was shocked. Those last few chapters released a rollercoaster of emotions in me. Never have i cried so much at a book.

I have never really enjoyed these type of books, but this one captivated me. The story is really powerful and it has taught me a few important things. The characters are complicated, which is a thing that I love. I want characters that feel real. The plot-twist is the one thing that kind of disappointed me because I was waiting for something huge and after all that I had read it didn't feel that shocking. I love the way it is written though. That part (and the end of the book to be honest) is written wonderfully. I will for sure read more of Taylor's books.

I really enjoyed the story telling in this book, and I feel like it just captures and brings you into the world of Hollywood in the Golden age era. It really reminded me of how fascinated people were with stars such as Marilyn Monroe and their lives, and I think it explores their lives so beautifully

a great book for easy escapism. the book is dissected into chapters named after each of her husbands. however, throughout the book we gather that the plot is not set on the beard husbands much at all. more so the highs and lows experiences that evelyn faces whilst immersed in the world of hollywood and being in love with a woman, during a time where it was unacceptable.

Now this is a damn fine tale. Don't go by plot. This one is already tried and tested before. Rich, sex siren of the 80s in a tell-all interview. It has been done. There are/were personalities like her in real life so taking comparison is not a big problem. But the way it is weaved and the intricate storylines that connects the different characters were masterfully done. You can't hate Evelyn Hugo. No one can.

“I spent half my time loving her and the other half hiding how much I loved her” This book was an emotional rollercoaster, reading Evelyn’s struggle throughout each relationship regarding her sexuality was both heartbreaking but also inspiring as a bisexual woman myself.
