About the book

image4.4/5.0

Enter the world of Homer's ancient Greece with the enhanced e-book edition of The Song of Achilles. This edition lets you further engage with this compelling story through video interviews with Madeline Miller and Gregory Maguire, bestselling author of the Wicked series, clips from the audio book at the start of each chapter, an illustrated map, and a pop-up gallery featuring over 40 images and descriptions of the characters, armor, and ships found in the book. The legend begins... Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. "The best of all the Greeks"—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles' mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals. When word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped, the men of Greece, bound by blood and oath, must lay siege to Troy in her name. Seduced by the promise of a glorious destiny, Achilles joins their cause, and torn between love and fear for his friend, Patroclus follows. Little do they know that the Fates will test them both as never before and demand a terrible sacrifice. Built on the groundwork of the Iliad, Madeline Miller's page-turning, profoundly moving, and blisteringly paced retelling of the epic Trojan War marks the launch of a dazzling career. Please note that due to the large file size of these special features this enhanced e-book may take longer to download then a standard e-book.

The retelling of The Iliad told through Patroclus's narration. I loved every sentence of this book cover to cover. Wish I could read this book for the first time again.

a more accurate title would be "the feet of achilles" since there was more mention of that than him singing. did we read the same thing? because really what do y'all see? am i missing something? it doesn't hit the way you said it would. naur for real because i was cheering for the trojans all along, for hector when he beat up patrick's ass, and felt genuinely sad when buttache(less) k worded him. i don't think i was supposed to feel that way. i also want to express my deepest hatred to the relationship dynamic portrayed between patrick and buttache. may the lorde release us of the shackles of heteronormative relationships because GODDAMN i was so tired of having to read through every time buttache acted like a 16 year old highschool jock. which brings me to the next worst thing (tw // mentions of pedophilia and rape) — WHY THE FUCK would i wanna read teenagers having sex? why would you decide to put that in a ya book? where's the disconnect like is no one seeing how fucked up this is? NOT TO MENTION the various cases of rape and sexual assault that go untreated throughout the whole book. why? WHY? ma'am you said fags in love die together i said cool. why the sexism? slavery? what was the reason?? the more that i recall what this book made me feel, the more mad i get, so imma stop here. feel free to show me what's good about it in the comments. i truly wanna like this but it's simply not it. would give it a 2 but the writing was good. so. a 4
