The greatest zombie movie ever made. Reducing it to a “zombie movie” may even be shortchanging it.
None of the pulp comedy (see: Romero) or action-packed explosions (see: World War Z). Just an austere, unsettling, and dissonant take on the aftermath of the zombie apocalypse.
The desperate atmosphere of the movie swallows you up, and the script develops meaningful characters arcs. The soundtrack is perfect - bleak, suspenseful, dense. The visuals are hauntingly amazing - the empty streets of London, the detritus, the relics left behind. Danny Boyle doing some of his best Danny Boyle-ing behind the camera, with a grainy texture that steers it far away from overproduction and gives it a more gritty, unsettling feel.
Lock the doors and make sure the lights are off.
