American Son is based on a Broadway play of the same name and I think it keeps true to its theatre style roots. It's filmed in one room with a very small cast which keeps the focus on the 'message'. Kerry Washington and Steven Pasquale delivered strong performances but other reviews I've read spoke of how they disliked their characters. I actually liked that they were flawed, people aren't perfect and in times of stress and raw emotion you'd expect them to react based on their experiences and upbringing. There were teachable moments about stereotyping and the frustration and pain that is caused by inequality. It also highlighted the complexities that some interracial couples and mixed race people face which isn't always given a platform. Overall, snapshot style films where they drop you right into a specific moment without the viewer getting all of the details or resolution aren't for everyone but if you're looking for a thought provoking and mature movie I'd highly recommend 👌

Whoa!!! I almost can’t breath as I just finished watching this😳Very timely and even though me as a white person may think that police handling of Blacks is horrific and I may march in “Black lives matter” protests ...I did not know the half of it! Yes I worried about my son but never did I have to fear what Black mothers have to fear for their Black sons!!! A must see and sooner better then later! My heart is still beating fast!
