January 28, 2021: I honestly didn’t know what to expect going into this film. I expected this to be a typical musical set in 1920’s Chicago, but this was FAR from typical. The music did a great job of both pushing the story forward and giving insight into the lives of other characters. The choreography was absolutely incredible. This film does something I’ve never seen before, and it does it in such an interesting way through different styles of music, musical numbers from all characters, and overtly sexual themes throughout. If you’ve never seen this one, I’d definitely recommend (even if you aren’t typically a fan of musicals). June 6, 2022: Watching this a second time really made me appreciate the technicality behind the scenes, because man, this thing is brilliant and it’s no surprise that it one Best Picture. There isn’t a single song throughout this film that isn’t an absolute banger, and I think it’s hard to dispute that claim. The choreography and lighting are absolutely incredible to accompany each of these songs. The transitions, intermixing of stage performances and “real life”, and character spotlights add so much to this film. This film is incredible, and I’m sure the soundtrack is going to be played a lot while I’m at work this week now!
