The Keepers
2017 . Documentary, Crime, Mystery

Interesting story that ends up being much bigger than the director anticipated, and you feel that flailing a bit. Not a strong narrative arc so much as lots of people talking about what happened in no particular order. You can tell the director fancies themselves a journalist (in his questioning of the former DA, for example) but the doc fails to uncover any new evidence or revelations. I'd rather have seen this as a book from the perspective of Jane Doe or the anonymous Deep Throat person.

Not flawless but I love the symbols and colors and crazy staircases and all of that production design so so much. Acting is great too. So many powerful scenes, both happy and devastating. Not entirely sure how I felt about the ending but it didn't ruin the series either way and that's key. Will probably watch again, which I rarely say about shows after watching.

The Last Duel
2021 . Drama, History, War, Thriller

The nuance in the acting and cinematography between scenes is incredible. I thought the social commentary was a little heavy-handed at times but not everyone I watched with got the commentary so maybe not. Definite award bait (probably best picture): a poignant look at toxic masculinity (both the frat boy and the Nice Guy) through a very well told medieval tale with gruesome fight scenes and surprisingly accurate historic touches.

No one seemed particularly objective. Also the "twist" seems pretty obvious from the beginning, so it's never really gripping.

Slow ish start but then gets more and more interesting. I also liked that it covered the entire 30+ years

Maggie Q is such a badass. Age gap between Maggie Q and Keaton is awkward though, especially when her father figure (Jackson) is like the same age. Great fight scenes, good story, some fun twists. Not what I expected, in a good way.

Gets in its own way. The nuanced tidbits, like the world itself, are incredible, intelligent, and leave me wanting more. The main plot drags a bit though and I was never fully invested in the characters (except Watts, who was grossly under utilized). I'd kill to see a TV show set in the same world but focusing on new characters. It's truly original.

Pain Warriors
2019 . Documentary

Interesting stories and a solid narrative arc, but makes literally zero effort to address potential counter arguments or attempt neutrality. Also, one of the included stories is about a woman whose condition included chronic pain but ultimately had little to do with pain (and nothing at all to do with opiates), which was weird in the context/with the angle they were taking. I was personally interested and invested in each patient's stories. I just didn't get much of anything beyond that (little to no logos with the pathos).

This is a fantastic movie. It's funny, sweet, endearing, and entertaining from start to finish. Redford is so perfect in this. I loved everything about it.
