Really interesting ambiance. The costumes and world are more interesting than the story itself, in my opinion. I like what they did near the end with the flowers etc. The main plot was fairly obvious, but I thought the specific angle was unique.. I wish they had spent more time on that. Worth watching if you're a sci-fi fan and/or like looking at pretty things. Plus most of the cast are solid (Macdonald, Awkwafina, Jovovich). But don't go out of your way to watch it. I bumped it from 6 to 7 purely for the aesthetic.

Dear Evan Hansen

I feel like there's a level of privilege in this movie/story that's never addressed, which hurts its message, but otherwise it does a good job of making you care about these people and their struggles. I have no real feelings about it being a musical, though the scene with the emails is probably better as a song. Interestingly, my friend who has never experienced depression or suicidal ideation but is a parent worried that the movie gave Evan too much agency and wished it has shown an adult expressing concern (even if not to Evan directly, at least in general). I, someone who has experienced depression and suicidal ideation but am not a parent, felt this aspect was more realistic and liked that they gave him the power to make his own choices as I don't like the message that a teenager should wait for an adult to give them help (rather than ask for it) or that an adult always notices. That said, we both agreed that we wished the movie made it clearer that depression lies to the person experiencing it, that it's not just hard to endure but actively lies to you about how much you suck while you try to do so. I Am All Girls

I wanted to like this a lot more than I did. The "reveal" was too soon, one of the character's backstories was cliche, and it takes a leap near the end that feels unrealistic. That said, the main story is interesting and a subject I feel like isn't told enough, especially when based on true people or events. I just wish they'd cut out the killer's arc and made this a full detective story (or vice-versa even). Always cool to see films from other countries, especially as they tend to deal with subjects we don't or approach them in ways we rarely think of. This South African film, which touches on some true history, served as a fantastic gateway, intriguing me into doing more reading. If nothing else, that's a compliment for a film.

Heartbreaking, gut wrenching. Performances are incredible. It's a deep statement on being a parent and being an American, separately and together. While I don't have kids, you can't help but identify with this guy who's just doing his best to get by. The fact that this is based on a true story, that this kind of story actually happens... Devastating.
