The Master
2012 . Drama

Excellent film. I'm just gonna say that I need to watch this again a couple times. One to understand the plot better and one to understand the characters and themes better because in a movie like this (like there will be blood) characters and themes are extremely important. First I will talk about this films relation to there will be blood. This came out 4 years after there will be blood and was both directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. Some actors are in both films aswell. You can definatley see the similar atmospheric tones which are identifyable in both films. The scors which is done by Johnny greenwood on both films creates an immense eerie, deep, unnerving and atmospheric feel in the film. Its what separates a film like this to a cheaply made, coming of age past drama about a writer and an ex sailor for the war. The score turns the film almost into a horror (once again, like there will be blood). DISCLAIMER THIS FILM IS NOT A HORROR FILM THOUGH IT CAN BE VIEWED AS TERRYFYING. The character of Freddie is so complicated and this is one of the reasons why I should watch this again. To watch a character who is clearly affected by the war and is so sexually driven because of this is captivating to watch on film. Some of the scenes are so gripping I cannot begin to describe (E. G: the "don't blink" scene, the "excuse me" scene and the prison scene.) Rip Phillip Seymour Hoffman who sadly passed away in 2014. His acting in this film is phenomenal. A truly wonderful part to watch and listen to. I knew him from his work in films such as boogie nights and the big lebowski but this is by far the best of his acting I have ever seen. So unlike the parts he usually plays. I found myself smiling at parts of this film. The wedding scene and the arrest scene stood out in particular as scenes which put a smile on my face. This was mainly due to the Acting and cinematography which are matched so well. Sometimes throughout this film you'll see a shot or scene which is just so perfect you cant help but break a smile throughout. I thought the plot got a bit confusing especially after about 50 minutes in. This is another reason I need to watch again. To really focus on the plot and make sure I can hear every word. It's quite hard to peice together a film with not much narrative. Like there will be blood, I guess you have to watch again to have an understanded, educated discussion about it. Overall fantastic film. Loved it and will definatley be Adding to my top 10 list. I will also be adding more to this review after I have a further understanding of the plot, characters and themes. -10/10 WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW Its a film about a man and a woman who falls in love and then the man goes to war. He promises her that he will come back and marry her. He (Freddie) comes back in the 1950s, after ww2, looking for jobs and a place in society but struggles. He eventually stow aways on a boat of a writer, psychologist and nuclear physicist by the name of Lancaster Dodd but he is reffered to by his "family" as "the master". Freddie comes along with Dodd and learns that he is the leader of a psychological movement called "the cause". Freddie also figures out that dodd is manipulating the followers of the cause and that its more of a cult than a movement. Freddie notices that dodd is doing the same to him so he leaves. He travvels half way across the country back to his old girlfriends house (the girl he wanted to marry) where it is revealed by her mother that she got married to a successful Ad man a couple years ago and now has 2 small children. Freddie did not realise how many years he had been gone for. It is too late. The girl who he promised to marry had gone and he feels enormous guilt. He then lives alone for a few years until one day he gets a call from Dodd (who now lives in England). He tells him to come over and visit, which freddie does. Dodd offers him a position to work for him which involves a steady solid job with good pay for the rest of his life but he declines, and walks away. Trying to start a new path in his life. PLOT^^^

Easy Rider
1969 . Adventure, Drama

Loved this. Its got one of the simplest and easy to follow storylines I think I've ever seen in a film which makes it impossible to lose track. Great performances all around the board from Peter fonda, Dennis hopper and Jack Nicholson. I imagine that in 1969, this movie was very well made and revolutionary. Just as the whole hippie, drug, psychedelic thing was in its prime this movie came out and I bet it resonnnated with a large majority of americas new audience. The endings a little weird which you'll know if youve watched it but it's fine because it's just a laid back and easy plot/storyline. I guess that's so that it links in with the theme of the film. Another thing is this film is incredibly easy to watch and chilled out. From the music to the scenery to the characters, this film is very relaxed. Almost no swearing aswell which is interesting for an 18 rated film filled with sex drugs and a bit of violence. All in all I really enjoyed this film. Go watch if you want to have a good and invested time. - 10/10

Killer Bean Forever
2009 . Action, Animation, Crime, Thriller

image10

Best animation 10/10 I have to say, this film is a true masterpiece. I'm not saying this as a joke because it's a meme but if you read between the lines its a really good film on paper. It withholds strong, engaging action scenes which present themsemselves to keep the movie together. The action scenes are what makes this film killer bean. The parts of the film which reminds us on killer bean. I must also mention how resourcefull Jeff Lew was with this film. With a low budget, and 4 voice actors he created plenty of characters which always add to thefilm and rewrite it as it goes on. I know that Critical said this but Killer bean was Jeff Lew's birthchild and if you don't already know from certain videos on the channel, he has been working on killer bean since the 90's. I'm so happy that he got to make a film out of this and now a show and make it his own which also turned out to be very popular in the young media. Correct me if I'm wrong but THAT is inspiring. Killer bean is a pillar in our culture. We need something like this to laugh at because of meme culture but also to enjoy as if you actually watched the whole film (which a lot of the viewers haven't) you'd probably really enjoy and wouldn't just watch the first 5 minutes coz it's a meme. I can't express enough how much I, and many others, want a killer bean 2. And I know that the new show follows on straight after the events of the film, but I have to say, it's just not the same. Film are what makes us enjoy the media and spin off TV shows aren't generally enjoyed by everyone as much as the film. Killer bean 2 would be a masterpiece especially with all the support that killer bean has now. it would be awesome. Well done Jeff Lew, you've done good.

I would absolutely recommend this film to anyone who has not already seen it. It's definitely something which I wasn't expecting and I can garuntee its a film which a lot of other people can not expect. Now I understand why bong joon ho is regarded as one of the best filmmakers/ screenwriters of the 21 century. Personally, I don't really think much of foreign films. I watched life I beautiful a couple years back and that left a special place in my heart as the best foreign film ever made. Then I watched parasite. Thankful for amazon prime, I whacked on this last night expecting it to be another emotional, heartbreaking film about a family (which is what a lot of foreign films are about). I was very wrong. This film has this creepy, sombre, gloomy, eerie atmosphere throughout which I abdoluelt love in all film and music. Examples of films with creepy atmospheres would be: There will be blood (which I regard as the great film of the 21st century) , the master, taxi driver (which I regard as the greatest film of all time) , the hateful eight ect. This is why I love all these films so much. Parasite executes this wonderfully and does a great job of morphing together this eerie vibe which stays throughout the film and leaves you wondering what the heck is going to happen next. I would probably have to make a spot for this on my top 10 list because it's so good. Definately one of the best films of the last decade. But I can't do this review without at all talking about the intricate, intruiging, vastly developing plot. With the first half of the film being a comedy about an extremely poor family, the second half is much much different. It gets to around the 1 hour mark when things take a turn for the worst and the film makes one of the must clever plot twists of all time. From there the situation continues to unravel and worsen for the two families, most of it being unknowing. This film is also the scariest film I have ever seen. Without being a horror film it has the most horrifying concept in a film. Ever. SPOILERS: Just think: you're a rich family with two children and unknowingly you hired a skint-poor family to come into your home (infiltrating it) and speak/ help/ teach your children. And then the old housekeeper turned out to have a husband living under the house for 4 years (which you had no idea about). I don't even need to mention the scene when the kid saw the ""ghost"" 😉. The scared the shit out of me. Overall this film is just great, nothing else to say. Just great - 10/10

Punch-Drunk Love
2002 . Comedy, Drama, Romance

Fucking smashing film. Not a typical Adam sandler film like how most people remember him by. This is no badly written thrown together shit this is a proper well made Paul thomas anderson masterpiece. Please do watch this film as there is a lot of people who have not seen it in comparison to PTAs other works. People know Adam Sandler as a comedy actor who plays stupid roles of not very funny characters (in my opinion). Nevertheless he is seen as a childish comedy actor. This film throws all that out the window and displays a character who has so much depth. First of all, the character or Barry is clearly socially inept. An introvert maybe. He shies away from human contact who he doesn't already know and dreads meeting new people as he tries to avoid it at all costs. He gets thrown around and bullied by his 7 sisters all through his life and as we see in the film, this has strong negative effects on his life. We can infer that he does not call sex call hotlines often and the one time that he does his financial and psysical life is ruined as he gets jumped, robbed and crashed into throughout the movie. As an audience we are screaming at him not to call it and go through with giving the details, but he does anyway because his awkwardness leads him to being confronted and pressured into things which he doesn't feel is right. Enter, Philip Seymour Hoffman. The dodgy, dangerous scan artist who only has 3 scenes throughout the whole film: his intro, the call scene and the Barry's confrontation scene. Hoffman leaves a staggering effect on us as we watch his character secretly fall apart and stress over Barry. We can tell from this that he is not used to confratations when he loses it over the phone at Barry, shouting and swearing at him, losing his cool. This is one of the main reasons why I love Philip Seymour Hoffman as an actor. He adds so much depth to his characters which you don't see with other actors. We can infer so much from how he walks to how he talks to the way he speaks to people. In this movie, he works so well with Adam Sandler because if how they work off eachother in the few scenes they have together. Narrative, character and depth is something which these actors execute so magnificently. Obviously this is down to Paul thomas Anderson aswell, who wrote and obviously directed the film. Not much to say here apart from that this is great writing and directing, as like with all of his movies. I have dedicated this month to Paul thomas Anderson as I did lats month to kubrick and January to scorsese. Its gonna be pretty hard to find a modern director who can top PTAs erray of films. The only one I have to watch now is Hard Eight and the only one which I was let down by or left unsatisfied was inherent vice (obviously great acting and directing but the narrative and story was way too dodgy and all over the place. Although this was intentional it didn't do much for me). Overall great film, I would definitely recommend and watch again. - 10/10

Magnolia
1999 . Drama

image10

Ok I've been watching a lot of Paul Thomas anderson recently and I have to say I have not watched a bad one yet. This is no exception. From start to finish this film is so engaging. Honesty if you really want to watch a film in which you don't want to lose focus, watch magnolia. Every scene, plot point and story in this film is beautifully written and shot its impossible to lose focus, and in doing so you never get lost in the stories or plot. For the 3 hours run time this film goes by extremely fast, which is a good thing. By the time the three hours is up you feel upset that it's over and you want to keep watching these characters in their lives and ponder their morals. There is two characters I want to talk about in particular. The first one being Jim (played by John C. Reilly). This man's performance in this film is so immense and emotional its hard to compare. To say that John is highly regarded as a comedy actor and could be seen as unprofessional because of this, some of his early works in films are outstanding! This being one of them. Jim makes you feel so sad and empathetic while also being heartwarming and fun to watch. The fact that this character is so lonely in his job, love life (divorced and alone for 3 years) and events is just heartbreaking. We watch this man being looked down upon by his peers, try to find love on the radio (his makes him smile, which makes me smile) but fails. Thing after thing after thing and then Jim meets someone who we, as an audience know he can't be with (because of cocaine addiction) but they both love eachother so much and are both in desperate need for eachother. Watching jim get upset makes me upset. Watching jim being looked down upon at work makes me feel upset. Watching Jim be lonely makes me feel upset. And that's why we feel so happy that he finds someone. I probably would have cried if Jim ever found out about his new girlfriends addiction and he had to stop seeing her. I was on the verge of tears watching Jim in this film and that would have been the tip of the iceburg. We just want these two character to be happy and we are glad how the movie presents their relationship at the end. Obviously Phillip Seymour Hoffman was great in this film, as he always is, but the second character I would like to talk about is Frank (played by Tom cruise). This character let the film down in my opinion. Not the character specifically, but Tom cruise. Personally, I really don't like Tom cruise as an actor and his scenes in this film made me bored and want to skip through, which I'm glad I didn't do. I think there would have been plenty of better actor choices in this film than Tom cruise but hey nevertheless he wasnt at all bad. Probably his best performance (doesn't take much to beat his cheesy, cash-grabbing action films I guess). Overall great film. Love the idea of all the different characters and stories, interwining with eachother by the third act. Amazing writing and directing. The fast paced, fast moving cinematography also make it hard to lose focus added with the plot, stories, characters, themes and messages. Great stuff! - 9.5/10 not a complete 10 because of Tom cruise.
