Fear Street: 1666
2021 . Mystery, Horror

image8

SPOILER WARNING I think this one was my favorite out of the 3 for several reasons: It's the ending and everything is cleared up, the final battle scene in the mall, and the cliffhanger at the end when someone grabs the witch book from the underground cave system where Nick was killed and it all started. Positives: - The lesbians won and we are grateful. - I loved how it was Nick and the Goode bloodline the whole time and Sarah Fier was just framed as a witch. - I loved the music in all three parts, it was cool in some scenes how one song would lead into another so it was constant music. - I loved the final battle scene at the mall, how they trapped the killers in the stores, how they used Deena's blood and the glow paint to distract them, how they sprayed them all with blood so would kill each other, and how the gate for the bookstore was still stuck like how it was in the first part when Heather tried to close it. - I really liked how Deena was transported into Sarah's life and lived as her through the origin of the "curse". - I liked how Deena placed Nick's hand on the heart so he saw everyone his family has ever killed and felt that pain. - The names disappearing from the wall and the witch's mark fading away were both really cool details. - I loved how Nurse Lane and Ziggy got back together and both got closure after everything that happened. Negatives: - The pacing was still slow. Every part has just been a little too slow at the beginning and that's just it. - We get that Sam was still possessed the whole time but she got really annoying like they didn't have to keep showing her screaming.

2021 . Horror, Mystery

SPOILER WARNING After just watching the first movie in this series, I liked this one a lot more. I thought it was more scary and action packed. I think that it explained a lot more about the origin and the story all together and overall it was just executed better in my opinion. Positives: - I think Sadie Sink does a great job in this film and I am excited to see her in the 3rd. one as well. - I thought the whole time that Cindy was the sister that lived but it was really Ziggy. I loved that. - I think the ending was cool with Deena being transported into Sarah Fier's world in a way. - I think the pacing of this film was better than the first. It was all set in pretty much one place, the camp. - I like how they find the underground witch's lair and really discover everything except where the witch's body is and that is why they couldn't stop the curse yet. - I was definitely more on edge in this movie, especially when Cindy and Ziggy are digging under the tree and all of the killers are coming towards them, it was really stressful and scary and I liked it a lot. - I liked how we got to see the witches' lair and read into the diary more. Negatives: - Why did Alice have to die? She deserved better after her character development. - Why are the people from Sunnyvale so incredibly mean like I get the classic rivalry but they need to calm down. - I definitely feel like these movies could be shorter. There's a lot of buildup that feels unnecessary. Overall: 3.5 out of 5 stars

SPOILER WARNING My expectations for this movie were really high because of TikTok. I really wanted this movie to be fantastic and it just wasn't. However I will say that it was intriguing and it was okay. I will say I am looking forward to the rest of the series. Positives: - I honestly kinda liked how most of them died because I wasn't expecting it at all. When Kate got killed int he bread slicer I was literally so shocked but I liked it. - Speaking of when Kate died, I like how it paralleled Heather's death in the beginning. She got stabbed but then she fought back until she was ultimately killed. - I like how all three parts connect and how consistent they were the details of all the deaths and killers, tying it to the next two movies. Negatives: - I thought it was really slow in the beginning, there was a lot of building. - The whole thing about Sunnyvale and Shadyside was kind of stupid, the only significance it really had was placing Sam in the car and having her crash with the Sunnyvale boys. - If the brother knew so much about the history of the witch and the other killings, why did he not know how to stop her? Overall: 3 out of 5 stars

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
2021 . Action, Adventure, Fantasy

image8

SPOILER WARNING I went into this movie with very high expectations because of the reviews it's gotten and what I've heard from friends and on social media. Although it didn't quite meet those expectations, I still really enjoyed the film. I thought there were some great elements and a great cast, but there is still some room for improvement. Positives: - I really enjoyed the parallels from the first fight between the father and mother for the first time and Shang Chi fighting his father towards the end of the film. - I loved the bus scene, and I think it was the best fight scene in my opinion. Shang Chi didn't have the rings yet or any weapons so he is simply fighting with his hands and using parts of the bus to his advantage and it was really cool. - The earth-bending that the people of Ta Lo used was a super cool detail, bringing in aspects of Chinese culture by showing their beliefs about their connection with nature. - I'm personally really glad that they didn't have cheesy ending with Shang Chi and Katy getting married or getting together because they really are just best friends despite everyone asking if they were together. - I thought it was awesome how Xialing took over her father's army, modeled after the Ta Lo warriors that all trained as equals, and I really hope to see what she does with it in a second movie or continuation of this story. - I wouldn't say that Wen Wu was my favorite character, but I think he gave one of the best performances of the movie. Negatives: - I understand that Shang Chi had to earn the rings, but from the trailer it made it look like he had them whole time and would fight his father with them to begin with, instead of gaining them towards the end of the movie. - I think I expected less humor from this movie and more of a look into the Chinese culture that we haven't seen before in the MCU. Although it was funny, I think it should have been a bit more serious. - Xialing talked so much about her father neglected her after her mother died, so I really wish there would have been a fight between them. She taught herself how to fight and no body really recognizes it. Overall: 4 out of 5 stars

Poltergeist
1982 . Horror

SPOILER WARNING I was impressed by this film more than I thought I would be. I knew that it would be good because of Steven Speilburg, but other than that I didn't know what to expect. I was nervous the whole time Positives: - I love how there was a creepy element to almost every scene start to finish. The first scene Carol Ann is already talking to the TV. - They did a really good job of making it creepy and scary for the 80's and the editing and SFX that they had. - I love the clairvoyant lady she was my favorite. - Something I noticed in a couple shots were reflections of people. With Carol Ann walking towards the TV in her parents room, you can see her reflection in the mirror in the corner. - I like how in the beginning, Diane was having fun with chair moving across the kitchen, it was kind of like a game for her. She was the most affected by it other than Carol Anne and she ended up being the anchor for her on the other side. - I thought it was really cool how they showed the entrance and the exit of the portal to the other side. - I really liked how it builds up to us finding out that to build the homes they just moved the tombstones and not the bodies, so when the mother is in the pool its the bodies that were not moved. Negatives: - I wish the clown was more involved than just at the end. He tries to kill Robbie and that is it. He is filmed a lot in this and so you think he would have a bigger part. - Some of the scene cuts were kind of choppy when they didn't need to be - I felt like some parts were kinda boring or slow. - The teenager was the worst actor in this movie. If she wasn't in the movie, it wouldn't have made a difference.

Spider-Man 2
2004 . Action, Adventure, Fantasy

image9

This is easily one of my favorite Spider-Man films out of all of them. I love mostly everything about it from the action, to the drama, to Peter's downward spiral/midlife crisis as Spider-Man. This is my first time watching the unrated version and I liked it better because it had more content. Positives: - Doc Ock is one of my favorite villains and I cannot wait to see him in Spiderman: No Way Home. - I love how he finally reveals himself to Harry and MJ. MJ and him can finally be together and she gets an actual answer to why he is worried to be around her or be with her. - I love how this movie is shot with the multiple camera angles, to the swiping shots of Spiderman swinging through the sky. One of my favorites is when Harry is looking for something he heard on the balcony, Doc Ock, and the camera sweeps back and forth with the movement of his head. - This movie is great because Doc Ock turns from good to bad and then back to good by destroying his creation and sacrificing himself for the greater good. - I love how Aunt May tries to help Spiderman fight Doc Ock with her umbrella. Negatives: - Harry is once again my least favorite character out of the 3 film series. He talks about how great his dad was, but all he was to Harry was ruthless and cruel. He also gives Peter no slack for even being Spider-man's "Photographer". Overall: 4 and half out of 5 Stars

Spider-Man
2002 . Fantasy, Action

image9

Since the release of the new Spiderman No Way Home trailer yesterday, I really wanted to watch the OG's. This series will always be my favorite of the three spider mans because it's the original, and its the one I grew up watching. Positives: - I loved the casting in this movie and I feel like they really nailed it. - The Green Goblin is one of my favorite Spiderman villains and Dafue really captures the essence of this character. I always think of him in this role whenever he is mentioned. - I quote this movie all of the time and their are so many iconic scenes throughout like: him finding out he is Spiderman, the fire scene, the final standoff, and much more. - I love how he does not use a machine to make webs, it just is in his wrists. - The fact that this film isn't filled with CGI and too much action is great. A lot of superhero films in the late 2000's and 2010 era sometimes over do it. - The jump scares still get me. Negatives: - I was so confused about Harry and Peter having an apartment together. I have seen this film so many times throughout my life and this is the first time I knew that their loft was their apartment after graduation. - Harry annoys me more than anyone. He is annoying, "steals" MJ, and never gives Spiderman a chance. Overall: 4 1/2 out of 5 Stars

Twilight
2008 . Fantasy, Drama, Romance

image7

Spoiler warning I have seen this movie so many times, and I always say I won't get wrapped in and that is always what happens. Even though this movie is full of bad writing and mid acting, I can't ever say that I hate these films. The first one will always be iconic and I know I will watch this in a year or so again. Positives: - The writing makes me laugh so hard because of how cheesy it is. - Something about this film and I don't know what it is, but once you start watching you cannot stop. - The baseball scene is the best scene in the movie and no one can tell me otherwise. - Alice is my favorite character because she knows everything that will happen with Bella and Edward and doesn't say a thing in caution because it could change. Negatives: - I like the actors in this film and I truly think they even they had a rough time acting throughout this movie. - This movie is so cheesy. - Edward watching her sleep will remain 1000% more creepy then anything else that he does in this film. Overall: 3 1/2 out of 5 Stars

The Suicide Squad
2021 . Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Comedy

image8

SPOILER WARNING I liked this Suicide Squad 10 times more than the original for so many reasons. It actually had a decent plot, made sense, had a great cast, and I was never confused about what was happening or who was who. I will definitely be watching this again because it was great. Positives: - Absolutely in love with King Shark and Sebastian the rat. - It had a great amount of humor throughout the film along with drama, and action. - Harley Quinn is just the best in all way because she is funny, but also a badass. - I like how the Joker wasn't in this at all and Harley got her moment to be herself instead of being a sidekick to Joker the whole time. - The duos that formed in this film are great including: peacemaker and bloodsport, rat catcher and King shark, and Harley and anyone. - I loved the visuals throughout including the different title sequence illustrations and the Harley Quinn escape scene with all of the flowers. - One of my favorite scenes is when Harley escapes the building where she was tortured. Visually that was so cool and Harley was great in it. - The whole bit with the Polka Dot mans mom was really funny to me because that is his motivation to kill anyone. Negatives: - I do not think the storyline was needed about Harley and the leader of the foreign country was necessary. I think she should have just been captured and had to escape. - I do find it strange that they had two separate teams. I feel like they could have been one team because one team everyone lived and everyone except two on the other team died. Overall: 4 out 5 Stars

The Assassin's Blade (Throne of Glass, #0.1-0.5)
2014 . Sarah J. Maas

image8

SPOILER WARNING Usually I am not a huge fan of short stories rolled into one book, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Since there are five short stories I will review each on separately because it would be confusing any other way. The Assassin and the Pirate Lord: Positives: - Celaena has always had a good heart deep down and you can tell because of how she freed the slaves even though she knew she would be severely punished. - I read this book 4th. In the series, and so I loved how we finally get to meet Sam. - I think it is very funny that Sam and Celaena hated each other at first and they were always annoyed with each other. - The banter between Sam and Celaena is really funny even though the main reason for the story is about freeing the slaves. Negatives: - I feel like the fight with Rolfe was a little anti-climactic because they only fight two little fights IMO. He only finds out her identity right before she frees the slave. - I wish we had gotten more detail in her life before this mission. Typical day in the Guild instead of just going straight into a meeting and then a mission. The Assassin and the Healer Positives: - Celaena really does not care about random people, but she finally let the healer in enough to help her which I really liked. - I thought it was great that she helped that girl get on her feet and convince her to at least try to live the gross town she was in to become a healer. Negatives: - This was my least favorite one because I feel like nothing really happened besides Celaena teaching a healer to live her dreams and how to fend off stupid men. - I feel like this was a transition story into her other adventures, and I do not quite know if it was needed. Sure it added some backstory, but overall could have been left out IMO. The Assassin and the Desert Positives: - I really enjoyed this story because it shows her strength, patience, and drive to become the best. - The plot twist about her friend actually being bad was great. She poisoned the mute master and Celaena defeated her for it. However, she let her escape and never come back. - I loved how the master trained her in all of these different aspects and how it took everything in her to get a session with him. She stole horses, walked miles and miles of desert, and more. - One thing I really like is how her skills she learned come back in the last two stories to help her in her adventures. Negatives: - Even though the master trained her, I feel like it should have taken less time for her to be accepted. The Assassin and the Underworld Positives: - I really like Arobynns character but not for his personality. I like how he is written, but as a person he is awful. He makes you think he is good and then tricks Celaena over and over. - I like how Arobynns tricks Celaena into killing Donavel because they didn’t agree and he knew she and him would. Donavel was all about freeing the slaves of Endovier, but Arobynns told Celaena the opposite. - Sam and Celaena’s relationship really stands out in this one because they pull through for each other. Like when she is captured by Phillip and left to drown in the sewer, Sam comes and helps her reach the surface of the sewer to escape by opening the grate for her to get out. The Assassin and the Empire Positives: - This was by far my favorite one because of all the action, romance, and drama. - Sam and Celaena finally fall in love just for Sam to be killed. It is so sad but in order for her story to continue it had to happen. - I read this story so fast because I couldn’t wait to read what was next. - I loved the twist about how Jayne was betrayed by his right hand Farren. Arobynns and one of his main guards trick Celaena into thinking different so I liked that a lot. - I also liked how we know how Sam dies because I have been waiting for 3 books now. - Lastly, we finally get to know how she ended up in the salt mines as a slave and that is because the King said death would be too easy for her. They wanted to torture her instead. Overall: 4 out 5 Stars

Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox
2013 . Science Fiction, Animation, Action, Adventure

image7

SPOILER WARNING I wanted to watch this for several reasons. The main one being that the new fish movie comes out soon and so I wanted to watch a version of the Flashpoint Paradox. I also just love anything the flash is in. Something interesting that I did not understand was that Aquaman and Wonder Woman were on the same evil side until she killed Mera. I understand that Mera was his wife, but he was literally sleeping with WW so I don't get it. Positives: - I love that in this alternate universe Thomas Wayne is Batman. Bruce has more of a moral compass and doesn't like to kill, but Thomas does not care about that. - The evil Wonder Woman and Aquaman thing is pretty good. They are two of the most loyal heroes to their people and so I like how it kind of flipped to evil. - I liked how Barry did not become the flash the first time he got struck by lighting in this timeline because that is the real truth of it. I like how Thomas helped him the second time by trying to heal him enough to try again. - Half way through the film Barry leaves when Batman is mid sentence, and Batman makes fun of himself and says "Now I know how it feels to be on the other side of that". I love how they actually addressed that in this that he just leaves people mid convo. - One of my favorite things in any Flash sequence is anytime Barry is racing another speedster and we just see the two different colored streaks. Negatives: - I wish at the beginning of the film when Barry goes back and changes the past that it was more explained. He runs for ike two seconds and then wakes up in another reality. - So we're really out here killing everybody: Deathstroke, Luthor, Steve Trevor, Mera, so on... for what? - Aquaman and Wonder Woman being lovers is not the move at all... Overall: 3 1/2 out 5 Stars

Loki
2021 . Action & Adventure, Sci-Fi & Fantasy

image8

SPOILER ALERT I was very happy with this show, and it was so much better the FATWS. I have so many unanswered questions and I am so ready for season two: - Where is Loki? - Where is Renslayer? - Is Sylvie going to regret her decision of killing Kang? - What are some of the main variants backstories like Möbius and Agent B15? Positives: - I love the whole timeline and the TVA. I think anything with time travel is so cool, so I was really excited when I heard that was the plot of the show. - The transformation in Loki alone was great. I think they really captured him as a character and Tom did an amazing job in this. - I think it was right amount of humor for Loki and the right amount drama for a marvel series. Loki really showed love and compassion towards Sylvie in the end. - I also liked how they brought in all of Loki's memories in the first episode. It just drains you right back into the MCU timeline. - The tempad's are cool and I want one. You can literally go to anytime in history. - Miss Minutes is a queen, but I knew she was bad from the start. - The twist of the timekeepers not being real in the actual TVA was crazy and a good twist. Negatives: - I did not like the fact that the Kang variant who controlled all time was more of a funny laid back character. I was expecting it to be a shocking reveal and it really wasn't. I wanted it to be someone we knew, but it was just a long drawn out scene with a long monologue instead. -- I was so sad that Sylvie did not trust Loki in the end and killed Kang anyway. I get why they did it, but it just made me sad. Overall: 4 out 5 Stars

Black Widow
2021 . Action, Adventure, Thriller, Science Fiction

SPOILER WARNING Omg wow! I absolutely loved this movie and it exceeded my expectations. It was packed with Easter eggs, action, comedy, and so much more. I cannot wait to see this movie again when it comes out on Disney +. Positives: - the comedy throughout was great and I laughed a lot. It reminded me of ragnarok humor wise. - Florence and Scarlett had great chemistry and it showed. - I like the symbolism of the white suits instead of the black. This was a time in her life when she was back with her family and she was happy so it wasn’t as dark as everything normally is with the avengers. - she finally got a sweet goodbye with yelana at her headstone. And I am so excited for Hawkeye and Yelena hunting him down. - the way they did her backstory was great and you really got to know just how hard her life was. Trained super spy, no friends, and a fake family that became real years later. Ugh so good. - I loved the visuals at the beginning, it made it stand apart from other marvel movies with the cinematography - the red and white lighting theme through was emmaculate. - the plot twist where black widow and Melina switched faces electronically to trick him was so good and unexpected. Negatives: - I just wish that they would have freed all the widows in the movie rather than her just transferring all the data to Yelena. Overall: 4 1/2 out of 5 stars

Four: A Divergent Story Collection (Divergent, #0.1 - 0.4)
2014 . Veronica Roth

image4

This book, if I am being honest, was not needed. I understand the appeal because everyone loves Four and I wanted to hear some backstory as well. However, I do not think I whole book was needed from his perspective going over the same things that were in the divergent book. Positives: - I quite enjoyed when Veronica Roth talked about Fours choosing ceremony and his initiation. - I loved the description of the defiance against his father. Every subtle blow at him was just what he deserved and it was great. - Seeing his fear landscape for the first time with him was a very cool detail which I enjoyed immensely. Negatives: - I really wish that Roth would have gone into more detail before he met Tris instead of focusing on things we already knew about their interactions with each other. - I wish there was more detail on his childhood and the history of the factions. - I would love to see a book about how the new Chicago is doing in Four’s POV. Basically a longer epilogue from what was in Allegiant. Overall: 2 out of 5
