The Cloverfield Paradox
2018 . Horror, Science Fiction, Action, Thriller

Very JJ mix of sci-fi that just teeters on the edge of being frustratingly silly and illogical but if you can let go of that to let the big picture keep moving it's a good bit of fun. I enjoy how the Cloverfield franchise has the same weird descents into the same mad version of earth that JJ has created, but told from very different edges of the sci-fi canon. The sci-fi tropes in were there equally measured in good and bad but if you don't take it too seriously it's fun. I haven't done my homework on JJ but I'd love to see him try his hat at something that stays very serious, grounded and without obvious or clumsy plot holes. I enjoy what I've seen of Fringe, Cloverfield, Super 8 etc but they all end up in that fun "ah well it's all so far-fetched now so why the hell not" tone that leaves them all feeling a bit YA-fiction. To make him a chef, JJ does great burgers and fast-food junk that really hit the spot in different ways, but man I'd love to see him cook up a steak.

I had high expectations whilst going on a Denis marathon and it did not disappoint. Dark, brutal and for a father, a truly anxiety inducing brilliantly uncomfortable thriller. I didn't try to guess or figure too much but but the reveals were perfectly placed to keep the direction of the plot fresh and interesting but not so overwhelmingly complex that you're lost. Looking forward to forgetting the details and rewatching in a few years.

Kate
2021 . Action, Thriller

Mini: Whilst the particulars that push this movie more towards 'meh' than 'magnificent' could be tweaked and fiddled, overall it's a solid effort and does what is says on the Wickette tin. Maxi (spoilers): Action sequences had great choreography even if Mary's action abilities were a tad soft. Knife fight scene had nice dollops of realism. Not talking the gory shots, more actually the amount of stabs some victims got when Kate wasnt hitting a vital area. Sometimes throughout though a stylistic camera technique would be used, that felt like it was just done to try something cool rather than used with intent. Although the level of damage dealt by Kate and that she received seemed fair (kudos to make it all a bit more feasible and grounded) the constant boosters felt like a video game health bar just recharging and the wildest bit of detachment. The neon pink car chase felt wild with that angle, if a bit tainted because of the sheer number of close-calls. Ultimately for every three steps forward this movie took one back, but on the whole it was a good ride and I appreciated the conclusive ending to give the whole journey up to then some gravitas. Fingers crossed the studio don't stim-boost this movie into any sequels as it will no doubt end up being as bloodied and beaten an offering as it's hero protogonist, but perhaps without half as much wallop.

Richard Ayode in animated form always warrants a high rating. Brilliant surreal humour with tons of quirk.

I may be a bit Emma Stone biased, but really enjoyed this live-action origin story. It didn't feel like it worried about tying in too much and was much the better for it. Dollops of style from a really fun industry to show a "villain" but even with some of the darker sides of the story it never lost the playful edge that make it Disney. Hope they take note of the success here and look at the truly interesting characters in their library and spin new stories out of this, rather than the "let's do it with expensive CGI" tactic as of late.

Smitten for choice of all the things you could ask for in burgers, hot dogs and alike. So many decent options I'm already planning my next visit. Just a bit gutted I couldn't try a few of the cocktails!

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace
1999 . Adventure, Action, Science Fiction

I chose to dive into the star wars saga here and it felt like it kicked off with a big political back and forth between dull faction leaders that I had no understanding of. Got the basics of goodies/baddies enough to boil it down for the boy, but that got a bit tiresome. Overall some good bits but a whole bunch of meh. Positives: darth maul, jedi death, pod racing. Negatives: CG jank, so much saber flourish, boring emotionless dialogue between political factions. So many naff transitions/wipes! 😂
