Hamilton
2020 . Music, History, Drama

I cannot say how often I turn on this soundtrack, because I truly don’t know. There is so much raw talent throughout the production of this show, and I love every single second of it. There are some standout roles throughout this film that I feel an innate desire to talk about tonight. George Washington (portrayed by the incredible Christopher Jackson) is an absolute blast. We get to see and hear each and every emotion of Washington’s through the pure talent of Jackson each and every time. Daveed Diggs plays two different roles in this show, however I feel as though his portrayal of Thomas Jefferson is truly something of Broadway wonder. I can’t think of anyone better suited to that role than Daveed. And finally, Jonathan Groff. The man who plays a hilarious interpretation of King George III. Absolutely hilarious each and every time he is on screen, with superb talent, and a love to make fun of himself off stage (especially about the spit take and the memes surrounding it).

Robin Williams was a staple of my childhood, playing so many of my favorite characters over the years; from Hook to Aladdin’s Genie and to the wonderful Fender in this film. Every time I think of Robin, I’m reminded of the joy, happiness, and laughter he brought (and still brings) to my life. His work truly lifts the world up and makes it a brighter place, and the world has been a bit dimmer since he left this world. Robin Williams has always been an inspiration for me and I pray that he always will be. Now, onto this movie specifically. Rodney Copperbottom is a character that I feel many can relate to. His parents didn’t have much financially, but they always did their best with him and they raised him with values that led him to help others and be extremely selfless. Throughout the film, we see Rodney grow and learn the harsh truths of the world while never giving up on these ideals instilled in him. Hearing Ewan McGregor voice this character only brings more to the table as we constantly hear true emotion and passion from both the actor and his character. Of course Fender serves as a comedic relief, best friend stereotype to Rodney. There are many fun one-liners and adult jokes thrown in by Fender that makes the film even more entertaining as an adult. We hear Fender do many different voices and sounds throughout the film, once again showing off the incredible range of the late Robin Williams. Ratchet serves as a villain who isn’t completely sure of himself while trying to make his mother proud to the best of his ability. Again, we have lots of comedy added with Ratchet as he always acts tough yet is truly a scaredy-cat when times of action come. The big man himself, Bigweld, serves as an adult leader inspiring Rodney throughout the entirety of the film; mostly indirectly, but eventually in person. Mel Brooks brings so much to this role and really has a fun time with it. This films is a fun ride all around! The comedy is absolutely exquisite, the music and musical numbers scattered throughout are a ton of fun, and the animation is unique to the world created. This is one of my favorite films of all time, and I hope that that feeling always stays with me.

Kiki's Delivery Service
1989 . Animation, Family, Fantasy, Adventure

I’ve wanted to watch through the Studio Ghibli films for some time now because I know how loved they are by so many. As my introduction to the studio, I have to say the hype isn’t over-exaggerated. This film manages to encapsulate true human emotion and realism in an unrealistic world where witches are common. The score is truly one of the best I’ve heard in a long time, the animation is simplistic yet absolutely beautiful, and the characters are so easy to become attached to (I’d love to be friends with Kiki and Jiji).

John Wick: Chapter 2
2017 . Thriller, Action, Crime

image10

Somehow, this manages to be even greater than the first. It takes the concepts from the first and expands on them in a way that feels natural and is even more engaging and enjoyable for the audience members. I really enjoyed watching this with a friend and I’m looking forward to watching the third together soon!

Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones
2002 . Adventure, Action, Science Fiction

image10

Probably the Star Wars film with the most memes to spawn from it, but that just makes this even more lovable in my eyes. This is one I’ve been dying to rewatch and I’m so glad to have seen it again. There is so much Jedi lore addressed here and we get larger connections between characters (Yoda trained Dooku, Dooku trained Qui-Gon, Qui-Gon trained Obi-Wan, and finally, Obi-Wan trained Anakin). I recently listened to the audiobook of the Legends novel Shatterpoint by Matthew Stover, so I was extremely invested in Mace Windu anytime he was around. That novel makes the character even more interesting and adds a lot of depth to the minimal screen time he has in this film. This film gets a lot of hate, some of which I understand; however, the action, politics, and romance are all realistic factors that we also experience in our world. Excited to rewatch Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008) with my friends next! For some, it’ll be their first time seeing it!

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace
1999 . Adventure, Action, Science Fiction

I know, I know; I’ve got incredible bias towards the Star Wars franchise. But you know what, I don’t care. This franchise is such a large and important part of my life; films, shows, books, comics, video games, and so much more. I’m so glad to be watching through all of the films with my friends, no matter their own opinions and feelings on them. This film was always a favorite of mine as a kid thanks to Darth Maul and Qui-Gon Jinn (two characters who have remained favorites to this day). It establishes so much in the canon universe from Midi-chlorians to the Jedi Council. The action is great, the plot is intriguing, and the characters we meet along the way are unique. Truly a wonderful film.

Monsters University
2013 . Animation, Family

The third and final animated film that we found in our cabin today and this is one of my favorite Pixar projects ever! I know many say it doesn’t live up to Monsters Inc. (2001), but I’d have to disagree. I love the camaraderie we see develop between Sully, Mike, and the other members of the OK fraternity.

The Suicide Squad
2021 . Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Comedy

Well this one did it. I have been dying for a new DC film for quite some time and we’ve finally gotten it alongside a killer new trailer for The Batman (2022)! I have so much love for comic books and the films that have spawned from them, and this film only heightens that love. My dad and I were constantly laughing and smiling throughout this because it was an absolute joy to witness. The action, the humor, the score, and the unexpectedness of who will die always left me on the edge of my seat and excited for more to come. As of this moment, this is by far my favorite film of 2021, and might truly be one of my favorite comic book films ever! Now here come some of my thoughts on specific portions/characters. Be warned. SPOILERS: Starro the Conqueror. THEY DID IT! AND THEY DID IT WELL!! Starro was truly phenomenal and showcased the talent behind the camera and brought to life a creature that I never thought would be portrayed in a live-action film. I still can’t believe they did it. Of course, Harley Quinn is a hoot! Margot Robbie is truly one of the greatest actresses ever and brings so much life to the character (as she always has). I loved how she had moments that focused on her, but it never overpowered the other members of Task Force X. KING SHARK VOICED BY THE GREAT SYLVESTER STALLONE!!! By far one of my favorite characters throughout this film and I believe James Gunn and the crew behind this film gave us our best on-screen interpretation of King Shark so far! Bloodsport was brilliant of course and played by the insanely talented Idris Elba. He brings so much life and depth to the character which is very refreshing because comic book films tend to be larger than life. Bloodsport kept the story realistic and served as a tether between the DC universe and the audience. John Cena as Peacemaker was another outstanding performance! Cena has really started to become a talented actor and I cannot wait to see the upcoming show based on his DC character. Peacemaker can be identified as many things (villain, hero, anti-hero), and this film manages to showcase them all.

Nobody
2021 . Action, Crime, Thriller, Drama

This film knows exactly what it is from start to finish and is absolutely brilliant in its execution. This is a film I was excited for from the moment I first saw it on Bob Odenkirk’s social media accounts, I missed it while the Covid-19 pandemic was raging, and school making me busy nearly 24/7. The acting, action, score, and cinematography are all pieces of this film that stand out to me a lot and I’d love to see a sequel to this film at some point in the future!

Fear Street: 1666
2021 . Mystery, Horror

image10

The third installment in the Fear Street trilogy is just as amazing as the first two Parts. The mix of slasher and supernatural elements is always balanced and kept at a realistic level. This film filled me with dread, anxiety, and made me cringe several times. The kills are brutal, but the revelations of humanity are even more so. The story of Sarah Fier is one of tragedy. The events of 1666 are told so well that we truly understand what happened in the past and throughout the history of Shadyside and Sunnyvale. Then, the connections in the present are brought to light and we get a very solid conclusion to the three part story. The acting is tremendous and it’s cool to see the cast in different roles throughout this trilogy. And my goodness, the score is absolutely perfect for each film. Very impressed with this entire trilogy.

Fear Street: 1994
2021 . Horror, Mystery

image10

This is one of few horror movies I’ve seen from my lifetime, and man is it special. I was excited for this trilogy that Netflix was releasing, and this first entry brought me so much joy. The suspense is built up, the accompanying score is perfect, characters feel diverse and relatable in a natural way, and there are some super fun kills. Slashers are some of my favorite films and this did the trick for me today. I’m very excited to see where parts 2 and 3 take this franchise, especially considering they both go back in time to 1978 and 1666! Expecting a lot more lore to this very interesting franchise!

In the Heights
2021 . Drama, Music, Romance

image10

This film is an absolute blast and goes to show how well an idea can come when everyone working on it is proud of the product and excited to complete it. The star-studded cast of this film all have amazing performances, some of my favorites were Anthony Ramos, Melissa Barrera, Olga Merediz, and the fun cameo style role taken on by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Speaking of Lin-Manuel, the music in this film is awesome in every sense. The emotions are always felt whether it be joy, excitement, grief, or even confusion. This is another home run in his career and I hope to see more like this and Hamilton (2020) which has a very similar feel. I wasn’t expecting the story to impact me so much. The love showcased on screen made me think of those in my life whom I love and everything I’d do for them. The grief when friends and family are lost broke my heart and made me feel for each and every character. And everyone following their own dreams; to me, that reminded me of me and my friends graduating high school and leaving for to different schools and careers (the same that I know will happen when I graduate college in a few years). I hope to watch this one again very soon as it’s one of the best 2021 releases that I’ve seen so far.

Parasite
2019 . Comedy, Thriller, Drama

image10

Well, I finally understand the hype surrounding this film. The familial interactions, the fraud, even the comedy; the thrill of it all was so immense. I don’t know much about Korean culture, but this film presented it in a way that could easily be enjoyed by anyone from anywhere in the world. I was sitting at a 9/10 for the majority of this film, but the ending does SO MUCH to tie this story into a nice bow and end the film in a tragic but hopeful way. This film is very unique, and I’d love to see more projects like it in the future.

Luca
2021 . Animation, Comedy, Family, Fantasy

image10

The newest outing for Disney’s Pixar is an absolute gem the left me feeling calm and blessed to have the people in my life that I do. The relationship between Luca and Alberto is one of great importance and shows how two boys from very different backgrounds can come together to experience the world together. I can’t lie, there were quite a few times that this film made me tear up. The protection from both Julia and her dad was so unexpected but touching in all of the right ways. There are classic Pixar films, but I’m so glad they’ve been creating unique stories and worlds lately (such as Soul (2020), Onward (2020), and the upcoming Turning Red (2022)). These films, in addition to Luca (2021) are providing a wonderful avenue for storytelling, and I’m thrilled to see where those stories take us.

The Silence of the Lambs
1991 . Crime, Drama, Thriller, Horror

image10

This is one of those classic films that I’ve been meaning to watch for so long now and I’ve finally gotten to it. From start to finish, this is a thrill! The acting is incredible, the story is unique and believable in every instance, and the violence felt so real every time it occurred. There’s no doubt in my mind that this is one of the greatest films made in both the thriller and horror genres, and I cannot wait to watch it again in the future!
