Fright Night
2011 . Horror, Comedy

image7

This feels like a scary PG-13 movie, and I find that I quite like that vibe. It’s a simple, straightforward story that knows where it wants to go and relies heavily on the talent of its actors, and boy, do they deliver.

Gretel & Hansel
2020 . Horror, Fantasy, Thriller

image5

I wasn’t bored, but neither was I excited or surprised. It’s not that this doesn’t have any substance, it does, the substance is just not up to par with the style.

Session 9
2001 . Horror, Mystery

image5

I get why this is a cult classic, but I did not enjoy it as much as I thought I would. The ending descends into something I’ve seen a million times before.

The Last Exorcism
2010 . Horror, Thriller

image5

While it does nothing to reinvent the wheel, it uses what it has adequately and gives us a possession movie that is more entertaining than some.

Vampires vs. the Bronx
2020 . Comedy, Horror

image4

I love the concept, the execution not so much. I knew exactly what was going to happen from the first scene of the movie.

Lake Mungo
2009 . Horror, Thriller

image7

Up until the final act of the movie, this plays out like your typical horror mockumentary, but it slowly morphs into a somber statement on grief, cross-purposes, and the fear and loneliness of inevitability. It’s the type of film that gets better the more you think about it, and is a deceptively simple execution of something so profoundly human.

Quarantine
2008 . Horror, Science Fiction

image6

This is heavy on the zombie horror and light on the “human” horror. Despite this though, the circumstance the characters find themselves in is creepy enough to keep the movie entertaining throughout.

Cargo
2017 . Drama, Thriller, Adventure, Horror

image5

I was expecting such an emotional labor that when I finally watched the film’s measured, almost tempered emotional journey, I found it lacking in intensity. There was a sense of distance.

Train to Busan
2016 . Action, Horror, Thriller

image8

Train to Busan is a film that manages to have its cake and eat it, too. It’s both a gory, intense shot of adrenaline, and a heartbreaking look at the tragedy of survival.

Emma.
2020 . Comedy, Drama, Romance

image7

While Emma is not my favorite Jane Austen book and this is not even my favorite adaptation of it (that title belongs to Clueless), I think the film still manages to capture the essence of the story and characters. The earnest frivolity of it all. And the helm is an enchanting Anya Taylor-Joy.
img
Enola Holmes
2020 . Mystery, Crime, Adventure

image6

“Politics doesn’t interest you. Why? Because you have no interest in changing a world that suits you so well.” Right to the bone. This line right here deserves all the points I’ve given this movie.
img
Memories of Murder
2003 . Crime, Drama, Thriller

image8

This is less an investigation and more an examination of the humanity and fallibility involved.
img
The Babysitter: Killer Queen
2020 . Comedy, Horror

image5

It knows what it is and unapologetically embraces it. If you’re into horror comedy B-movies that lean very heavily on the the silly, you’re going to enjoy this.
img
Metamorphosis
2019 . Horror, Thriller

image5

There are a few creepy moments but not enough to make the movie truly memorable.
img
Peninsula
2020 . Action, Horror, Thriller

image5

If you think of Peninsula as a summer blockbuster action film, then it’s slightly above the usual fare. But if you expect more from it, it’s going to disappoint.
