Close Enough
2020 . Animation, Comedy, Drama

image8

Close Enough gives us a humorous but somewhat realistic take on what it means to be parents transitioning into their thirties. Its adorable cast of characters, especially Candice brings forth a fresh new take on the animated family sit com genre.

Big Mouth
2017 . Animation, Comedy, Romance

image8

With its commendable humor and quirky art style, Big Mouth gives the viewers a look into the lives of budding teens on the cusp of puberty with a slight twist - their raging teenage hormones are represented in the form of monsters. The back and forth between monster and its respective teenager is often times hilarious, and although the show is vulgar at times and comedic in nature, it still manages to provide us with a somewhat realistic look on puberty, minus the monsters.

Pumping Iron
1977 . Documentary

image9

Pumping Iron highlights the golden age of bodybuilding, specifically the 1975 Mr Olympia, where Arnold Schwarzenegger wins over his main competitors, Lou Ferrigno and Franco Columbu. The documentary shows us the stark difference in emphasis between the two generations of bodybuilding; bodybuilding back then focused on symmetry and aesthetics, while the sport now mostly emphasizes on mass and size. It was a fun and enjoyable documentary; seeing the lighter side of the bodybuilding scene as well as the preparations that the athletes go through in order to get into competition shape was inspiring to say the least. I also particularly enjoyed the mind games and the psychological warfare that goes on behind the scenes for the competitors. Overall, it should be a must watch for old and new bodybuilding enthusiasts or for anyone looking for another reason to be motivated to go to the gym.

The New Mutants
2020 . Horror, Science Fiction

image7

The final entry of Fox’s X-men franchise before Marvel’s takeover, The New Mutants offers a look into some of the mutants less known to the general public, which sadly do not get named in the movie. I personally think the cast is great, with a great emphasis on Anya Taylor Joy’s performance. Sadly, it’s script and storyline leaves much to be desired. Still worth a watch if you’re a long time X-men fan.

How I Met Your Mother
2005 . Comedy, Romance

image10

In the same vein as Friends, How I Met Your Mother is a classic tale of a couple of twenty-something New Yorkers living their lives, going through love, laughter and loss. While many would be quick to compare the two shows and rating one above the other, I would prefer to see them as equally great shows, each offering their unique take of life in the Big Apple. The characters and humor are always entertaining and it’s relationships are something to be admired and sought after. Definitely give this a go if you feel a binge coming up.

Jujutsu Kaisen
2020 . Animation, Action & Adventure

image9

Although being a newly released anime with just 8 episodes, this show has been a highlight of the level of quality that studio MAPPA often brings to the table. Alongside the recently released God of High School, as well as the upcoming final season of Attack on Titan, this anime is a must watch in 2020 for those looking for a noteworthy shonen anime.

Friends
1994 . Comedy, Romance

image10

I grew up with Friends by my side. I’ve binged it countless of times; whether I’m bored, sick, heartbroken, or even angry at times. This show always manages to make me laugh and smile. It’s a fantastic show with a great cast and humor that holds up well even by today’s standards. I’d ask everyone who hasn’t watched it to give it a go.

The Lion King
1994 . Family, Animation, Drama

image8

The Lion King is a must watch for every Disney fan, young and old. It’s a passage of right for those wanting to get into Disney films in general. The storyline and soundtrack alone are worthy of praise, but further commendation should go to the voice actors for the amazing portrayals of their characters.

Palm Springs
2020 . Comedy, Romance

image7

A Groundhog Day-esque movie, Palm Springs offers humor and adventure with a dash of romance sprinkled in between. The on-screen chemistry of Cristin Milioti and Andy Samberg is palpable and engaging. Pacing of the movie was pretty good as well. Overall, a great watch during these trying times.

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)
2020 . Action, Crime

image8

A deserving successor to the heavily criticized Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey offers viewers a closer look into one of its more prominent members - Harleen Quinzel. Coupled with a strong female cast, new characters, and Ewan McGregor as the main villain, the movie is a good watch for comic book fans, or anyone for that matter.

The Mandalorian
2019 . Action & Adventure, Sci-Fi & Fantasy

image10

Everything you could want from a Star Wars fan’s perspective. Growing up with this franchise, watching The Mandalorian threw me back to when I was a kid watching A New Hope for the first time. It successfully mixes old and new elements into the show, providing a refreshing take on the old classics.

The Haunting of Bly Manor
2020 . Drama, Horror, Mystery

image9

The second installation of The Haunting series, Bly Mannor offers the similar horror elements that we’re used to from Hill House, but enhances it with a brand new location and storyline. It’s characters are individually unique and it’s storytelling is complex. A must watch for those who have binged the first season!

The Haunting of Hill House
2018 . Drama, Horror, Mystery

image9

The Haunting of Hill House is a breath of fresh air in the horror genre of tv shows as of late. It doesn’t rely on jumpscares and common tropes, but instead builds heavily on suspense and its plot.

Hubie Halloween
2020 . Comedy, Mystery, Horror

image7

Not Sandler’s best but not his worst either. It’s a good movie with a surprisingly star studded cast. It’s a great flick to watch whenever October comes around.

Holidate
2020 . Comedy, Romance

image7

For those of you without a special someone during the holiday celebrations, this movie might relate to you. The movie delivers a somewhat realistic experience to what it’s like to have a “holidate”. Great movie for the weekends.
