All Rise
2019 . Drama

Season 2 (10/10): Such an amazing season all around relating to the current political and social climate within the United States from Black Lives Matter, corrupt politicians, and even the Covid-19 pandemic. All around, this season was brilliant and constantly showcased the good portions of humanity that we all wish to see more of. Entire Series (10/10): Seriously one of the best courtroom dramas (based in the United States) that I’ve ever seen. You can tell that true heart was put into this from the writing to the acting, and even to the things often overlooked in TV shows such as the score and cinematography. Absolutely brilliant all around! I’m so incredibly sad to watch this wonderful show end, but I’ve enjoyed both seasons. Who knows, maybe a streaming service will #SaveAllRise

Marvel Studios: Assembled
2021 . Documentary

WandaVision: Such a wonderful behind the scenes look for this show. I’ve loved this from start to finish and for a comic geek like me, it’s always enjoyable to see how it all gets made. The Falcon and The Winter Soldier: Such an awesome behind the scenes look at another awesome MCU show! I’m a massive fan of the show and to see how certain things were done and how much time was invested in the series was a treat for a comic geek like myself. Loki (Season 1): Another great behind the scenes look for an MCU show, but with loads of monologues by Tom Hiddleston via his narration and guidance through the show. Really enjoyed the explanation behind Alligator Loki, very unique, especially for a biologist like myself.

Season 10 (7/10): This season was a strange one. First, it aired over the course of a year and a half due to the pandemic and shooting issues. This isn’t one of the strongest seasons, however the final two episode really bring this season higher in my eyes. There are also a lot of pointless episodes and what I consider the worst episode of the entire series so far. All around, this could’ve been better, but I’m looking forward to season 11!

Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives
1986 . Horror, Mystery, Thriller

image9

How in the world do we go from the worst film in the franchise so far to the best so far? This film is a TON of fun! This one is way more comedic than the previous five installments in the franchise and that’s something I really enjoy with horror films. It was cool to see such a conclusive end to the events initiated by the return to Camp Crystal Lake (although renamed) and I love that we get to see Jason die yet again (third time total now I believe). The score is a blast and love how much we get to see Tommy grow as a character (in the fourth, he’s a child, and in the fifth he’s treated like a side character). This score accompanies much of his growth and I really enjoyed it.

Friday the 13th: A New Beginning
1985 . Horror

image3

This was super disappointing as a whole. A fairly decent first act with good moments, but that third act wasn’t it at all. So much of the violence and gore happens offscreen throughout this film which isn’t really what you want with a slasher. When the killer kills, it always looks like a rubber hand holding a rubber knife and we never even get to see his face. A lot of the kills are, quite frankly, boring. Definitely the weakest entry in the franchise so far.

Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter
1984 . Horror

image7

I enjoyed this one quite a bit, but man, I got attached to so many characters that ended up getting killed by the notorious Jason who returns from the dead. The kills in this one are very intense and start super early on in the film. So far, this is one of the better entries to the franchise that I’ve seen and I’m hoping to watch more soon! (I know, I’ve been watching these at a pace of one per month, but hopefully that’ll get better now that I’m done with Summer classes).

Space Jam: A New Legacy
2021 . Animation, Comedy, Family, Science Fiction

This is seriously one of the worst films I’ve ever seen. I hated almost every second of it. I’m going to break down some of my thoughts, and I apologize in advance if I rant a bit and start to ramble. The blatant marketing for Warner Bros. properties (Matrix, DC, Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Rick and Morty, and so many others) throughout this film is so incredibly obnoxious. They tried to be satirical with these properties and it constantly looked like a cash grab from the studio. Every time this happened, I was pulled from the screen, and I hated it all. The idea of a father coming to terms with his child having their own dreams; this is a fairly decent plot line for people of all ages, cool. But then you throw in an AI who wants to be famous? And to do so, he kidnaps LeBron James and his son Dom? HE’S A FREAKING COMPUTER PROGRAM, JUST TURN HIM OFF. I knew so much of what was about to happen throughout the film from the trailers. The trailers spoiled every single scene that had a bit of humor attached to it. The acting was absolutely horrendous; I didn’t expect greatness from LeBron, but everyone else could’ve been good. LeBron’s wife was a terrible actress who’s character felt shoehorned into the movie because the executives at WB wanted a woman in the cast. My favorite parts of this film were the 5 minutes I missed when I got up to use the restroom and the licorice and root beer that I consumed while watching.

Alien: Covenant
2017 . Horror, Science Fiction, Mystery

image9

What an awesome film!! We get so many different aliens that we get to see in action against the humans who arrive on the planet first introduced in Prometheus (2012) and see the return of Michael Fassbender’s android David. In addition, we see Fassbender play an identical android known as Walter. These two androids were definitely the highlight of this film for me! We get much needed continuation on David’s character, and Walter serves an important purpose. Spoilers: Seeing how the Xenomorphs were created is so interesting and I hope it’s something that we see explored in another entry to the Alien franchise in the near future!

Prometheus
2012 . Science Fiction, Adventure, Mystery

image6

This film surprised me with how good it was, however it simply doesn’t feel like it should be included within the Alien franchise. There isn’t a single Xenomorph present, so this simply feels like a sci-fo horror film. I mean, c’mon, it doesn’t even have the word “Alien” in the title. The action was good and I liked more characters in this one (Ripley was the only one I cared about in the originals). Particularly David (Michael Fassbender), Janek (Idris Elba), and Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace). There acting is what truly carried this film for me, otherwise, I would’ve given this a lower score.

Alien Resurrection
1997 . Science Fiction, Horror, Action

image4

This film was so predictable that it was unbelievable. Everything that you think might happen with a clone, happens. The gore and blood were so absolutely atrocious and had no feeling of realism. The swimming scene was a lot of fun honestly and was the only thing I didn’t expect in this film. Lots of good slasher vibes here while trying to swim away. And that final alien encounter on the ship was super awkward despite the best efforts of the cast to act serious. Very strange portion.

Alien³
1992 . Science Fiction, Action, Horror

image6

I’ve seen this film get a lot of hate, and I can understand some of the reasons, but I truly enjoyed the majority of this film. This is no technical masterpiece, but I think the writing was done very well and that the plot was a unique spin for this franchise. Ripley’s arc throughout this film was very thought out because it addresses her trauma and experiences from the first two films as well as justifies her decisions towards the end of this film. This isn’t perfect, but it definitely feels essential to the Alien franchise. Maybe I’m wrong. David Fincher is a director I’ve heard a lot about but never explored, so it was interesting to see his direction here (especially since this is the first feature film he directed).

The Flash
2014 . Action & Adventure, Drama

Season 7 (6/10): This season is such a hard one for me to rate and talk about. We have AWESOME Speedster battles (particularly within the two part season finale), but we also have the over the top usage of “I know you’re a bad guy, but you can be better” speeches. I know it’s been a gimmick of this show for a long time that Barry wouldn’t kill, but man, it gets old when he could knock them out and be done with it. I almost completely hate Iris’s character now because of how terribly she’s written and how poor of an actress Candace Patton is. Tonight’s finale definitely felt like earlier seasons of this series (the best so far) and that makes me extremely excited for season eight (which premieres in 119 days)!

Aliens
1986 . Action, Thriller, Science Fiction

Despite the absurdity of some of the sci-fi elements of this franchise, the second entry manages to be even better than the first. Particularly, Sigourney Weaver’s character of Ripley has fantastic writing that allows for true acting abilities to be showcased. I love that we had some more encounters with Xenomorphs and got to see large numbers of them in action. It’s been quite a few months since I watched Alien (1979), but watching this second entry definitely brought back my interest in finishing this franchise and I hope to do so very soon!
img
Los Bandoleros
2009 . Action, Drama

image4

I can’t believe that Vin Diesel actually directed this; I truly had no clue until I saw his name in the credits. This is a unique short film showcasing the time between The Fast and The Furious (2001) and Fast & Furious (2009) from the perspectives of Dom, Letty, and Han. This doesn’t truly feel like it’s a member of the franchise, more of a politically based film for the time. Best part of this was getting to see more of my boy Han, truly one of my favorite characters in this franchise.

The Turbo Charged Prelude for 2 Fast 2 Furious
2003 . Action

This is not even deserving of being considered a short film. Sadly this exists when it could’ve simply been the cold open for 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003).
