This Treme landmark lost its matriarch last year, when founder and New Orleans icon Leah Chase died at 96. The whole world mourned the loss of the Queen of Creole cuisine, who turned Dooky Chase’s into the fine dining establishment it is now and spent decades feeding customers gumbo z’herbes, shrimp Clemenceau, and fried chicken. Famous for its soul food, lunch buffet, and private collection of African American art, it’s now run by Mrs. Chase’s Paris-trained grandson Edgar Chase, so remains in excellent hands.
