On the famous Ponce de Leon Avenue, this small, dark restaurant has a young and hip industrial vibe with exposed pipes and concrete walls. Although brother and sister team John Mercedes and chef Maria Grubbe named the place after the usual Santurce morning soundtrack (roosters), it feels worlds away with influences as far ranging as Turkish, Japanese, Catalan, and Korean surfacing in theme nights like Ramen Night and Taco Tuesday. When Grubbe’s not busy in the Gallo Negro kitchen, you can catch her hopping all over town doing “takeovers” of other restaurants or hosting underground dinners with her Underground Dining Club. [$$]
