This off-the-beaten path restaurant is sacred culinary ground in the working-class Villa Palmeras neighborhood of Santurce. La Casita Blanca ("little white house") has been an institution for the past 30 years. Soulful, homey, and eccentric, you'll find plantains swinging from the ceiling and a Christmas tree decorated with beer cans. As soon as you sit down, you’re welcomed with a basket of bacalaitos (codfish fritter pancakes) and asopao (chicken and rice soup). The chalkboard menu changes daily and is written only in Spanish. Although few of the staff can translate, point to any of the items and expect delicious Puerto Rican comfort food. If they’re available that day, don’t leave without trying patitas con garbanzos (pig’s feet with chickpeas), pastelón de carne (plantain and ground beef lasagna), and the coquito tres leches (coconut milk cake) for dessert.
