Not 100% sure how to rate this one, wild ride, with lots of guessing on my part all being wrong. Will be interesting to see where season two goes from here. Another crazy show from Korea that leaves you thinking after a roller coaster of a show.

Holy sheeeeeeet. This show gave me a pit-of-my-stomach, unsettling sense of dread akin to a good episode of Black Mirror. It's eerily prescient in its portrayal of social psychology and control of the masses via fear mongering and media. Some of its themes even hit on previously occurring events in America, despite being about something completely different. This show is easy to watch as a sci-fi thrill but may fall short as entertainment value alone. If you add in the layers and layers of psychology, social commentary (the inclusion of the ads on the Arrowhead's videos was too perfect), theology and cult study, etc.. It's incredible and can be dug into for days. This show scared me, in the best way, and gave me so much to think about. It has something resembling a happy ending (within the context), which I appreciated. I didn't love certain aspects of the ending but I didn't hate them either, and I'm not sure I can think of a better way to have ended it. ⚠️ There are brief scenes of extreme violence in the show (as a warning for the squeamish), but you always know when they're coming and can look away or fast forward if desired.

Summoned by the devilish imagination of writer-director Yeon Sang-ho, Hellbound leverages its terrifying concept to thoughtfully explore human fallibility.

Update: The Ending is Twisted!! WTF!! Another big Korean hit Make no mistake this is not like squid game and it's not the next squid game. The series is mystical, dark and sinister and brought us by Yeon Sang Ho the director of Train To Busan. This story revolves around 3 ape like monsters who kills and burn sinners who are bound to hell. But here's the take the mystery in this series is do this monster are real God's send or just a product of a religious cult? I will not be the one to spoil it so see it for yourself.

Anyone hoping for the next Squid Game is likely to be a little disappointed with this latest from Korea. It's still an interesting concept all the same though - angels appear before individuals, warning them of their impending journey to hell, and then when the time comes they are beaten to a pulp by three huge otherworldly creatures before being burnt to a crisp. Of course, you can't just have six episodes full of people getting beaten up, so the main focus of the show is on the characters who are trying to understand or exploit the strange new world they find themselves in - police, lawyers, religious cults and more. With episodes 4 to 6 shifting 4 years into the future and starting with an almost completely new set of characters, Hellbound does struggle at times to deliver, but there are a couple of outstanding episodes and it's one of those shows where you just want to watch it all to see how it ends.
